WELCOME
to
Mrs. Poss' Room!
2008-2009

Hi!
My name is Beth Poss. This is my third year at Fulbright. I am one of
the two speech pathologists at Fulbright. I am so glad you came to visit
my web page. This page will contain general information about what's
going on in speech. I will update it monthly.
My
treatment philosophy is trans-disciplinary (using teaching strategies
from occupational therapy, reading and math resource, and physical
therapy ). I believe that in order for a student to be successful in
speech and language, they must also be successful in listening, reading,
talking, and writing. Most of what we target in speech therapy ties
directly into what each student is learning in class. All of the therapy
provided at Fulbright is centered on this philosophy.
I also feel that many students must have sensory integration
incorporated into their therapy time. Sensory integration can include
anything from hand- fidgets, to running on the play ground, to bouncing
on balls. It can also include art activities, cooking, and playing
games. The main focus of therapy is to teach students in a dynamic
(always monitoring and changing) mode for maximum success in the
classroom. Each student is unique and requires their own treatment style
according type of disability, personality, level of attention, and
behavior.
We
use books often in therapy as a teaching tool. They are our
greatest resource as speech-language therapists and educators. We encourage you to read to your children
everyday. As your child becomes a successful reader, let them read out
loud to you. This will increase their fluency and comprehension. Also,
encourage your child to read on their own. Typically, reading books for
personal enjoyment 30 minutes before bedtime is the most beneficial for
children.
Please
don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about speech or
your student. NOTE: We are having trouble getting our phone lines
transferred to our new location in the building. Please contact the
office at 447-4700 and leave a message if you need to reach me. It is an honor to have your child as one of my students.
